Albert King - Blues For Elvis

Albert King - Blues For Elvis 1970

mp3 320 + scans

JOHN MAYALL & THE BLUESBREAKERS - LIVE: 1969

Live: 1969 captures John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers at a critical point in their hugely influential career. The first track on the album was recorded at the last performance by the 'Laurel Canyon' line up of John Mayall, Mick Taylor, Steve Thompson and Colin Allen at Birmingham Town Hall on May 9, 1969.

Following this tour, Mayall made two big decisions: firstly he was going to relocate to the USA and secondly he was going to form a new, more acoustic based line up which would not feature drums. This dramatic change was captured for posterity in the film 'The Turning Point'.

The rest of disc 1 and the whole of disc 2 are the recordings made on the June 1969 tour by the new line up of John Mayall, Jon Mark, Steve Thompson and Johnny Almond. These were made during the course of the filming of 'The Turning Point'.

Gerry Rafferty - Night Owl

1979
wavpack.scans

On his second release for United Artists, Gerry Rafferty focuses an equal amount of attention on his lyrics and on the sincerity of the song's moods to create one his strongest and most heartfelt albums. Delicate, touching, and extremely poignant, Rafferty blankets all of Night Owl's tracks with a late-night/early-morning earnestness that is highly effective throughout. Although he managed to do just that with 1978's City to City, Night Owl generates a stronger intimacy and a genuine romantic feel through Rafferty's guitar playing and the way in which his lyrics are sung. The sentimental softness of "Days Gone Down," the controlled exuberance in "Get It Right Next Time," and the pathos which is instilled for the lonely wanderer in "Night Owl" all add to the album's solemn yet moving atmosphere. Rafferty continues this mood with tracks such as "Why Won't You Talk to Me," "Family Tree," and "It's Gonna Be a Long Night," giving the traditional singer/songwriter style some enchantment and allure through his vocal subtlety. In the U.K. the album broke into the Top Ten, and in the United States it sold 500,000 copies, earning Rafferty a gold disc. "Night Owl," "Days Gone Down," and "Get It Right Next Time" all cracked the Top 30, but unfortunately Rafferty failed to match the success of Night Owl with any of his albums that followed. AMG

Night comes down and finds you alone
In a space and time of your own
Lost in dreams in a world full of shadows.

Down the street the neon light shines
Offering refuge and hope to the blind
You stumble in with no thought of tomorrow.

Yes, I get a little lonely when the sun gets low
And I end looking for somewhere to go
Yes, I should know better but I can’t say no.

Oh no no no
No no no no

The lights are low and the Muzak is loud
You watch yourself as you play to the crowd
One more face in a palace of mirrors.

One more drink, you’re sailing away
One more dream but it’s looking ok
One more time to watch the flow of the river.

Yes, I get a little lonely when the sun gets low
And I end looking for somewhere to go
Yes, I should know better but I can’t say no.

Oh no no no
No no no no no no no oooooooh

Yes, I get a little lonely when the sun gets low
And I end looking for somewhere to go
Yes, I should know better but I can’t say no.

Oh no no no
No no no no

You’ve seen it all yeah you’ve seen it before
Like a fool you always come back for more
You live your life like there was no more tomorrow.

Night comes down and finds you alone
In a space and time of your own
Lost in dreams in a world full of shadows.

Yes, I get a little lonely when the sun gets low
And I end looking for somewhere to go
Yes, I should know better but I can’t say no.

ni la duda ni la tristeza;

Gerry Rafferty - Snakes & Ladders

Two years after the release of Night Owl, Gerry Rafferty presented his fans with Snakes & Ladders, and although some of his former album's charm and lyrical appeal manages to resurface, the whole of the album comes up short. The memorable melodies, moving allegories, or genuine lyrical warmth that was put into past efforts arise in a couple of tracks, like in the beauty of "Bring It All Home" or in the mystique of "Look at the Moon." It's not that Rafferty's writing is weaker or has been restrained, it's the fact that he fails to present enough passion from an instrumental standpoint throughout the entire album, and to a lesser extent a vocal one, to establish the same type of emotion or atmosphere as he did with City to City or Night Owl. "Royal Mile" was released as a single in the U.K., but only climbed as high as number 67 there and number 54 in the U.S. The album went to number 15 in Britain, but Rafferty showed signs of relinquishing his genuine style ever so slightly, and 1982's Sleepwalking disappointingly confirmed this. Even though his exterior talents had dwindled only slightly, the intangible qualities that made Rafferty such a compelling artist seemed to be left behind in the past decade.

Hot Tuna - Yellow Fever

Hot Tuna - Yellow Fever

Blues Rock
1975
wavpack.scans

Jorma and Jack are solid electric on one of their finest and superbly crafted recording endeavors on Yellow Fever, one of my absolute favorite Hot Tuna albums, from the first moment I heard it. Their guitar and bass communicate to each other beyond what words can describe-only your ears will understand how well they collaborate and weave in and out of each others realm with their skillful tightness. Their music is in a category of their own and totally unique in the history of rock (and roll). Their talent and abilty to take blues and spin it somewhere else has always amazed me. This album demands listening and sounds just a fresh today as it did wihen it was first released years ago.

This is one of my favorite hot tuna albums. if you like the electric sound on americas choice or hoppkorv, this album was released in between and is definitely heavier and more muscular but similar. sunrise dance with the devil is of course one of hot tuna's best known songs. jorma goes for the searing sound, multilayered on almost every track. only weakness is a couple of the songs on side two just dont go anywhere interesting. the instrumental finale surphase tension is worth the price of the disc alone. not sure why this has been out of print in the states.

Hot Tuna's second album of 1975 began with a cover of Jimmy Reed's "Baby, What You Want Me to Do" rendered in the group's characteristic noisy electric-guitar style, an approach that was typical of this more-of-the-same album. By this point, Jorma Kaukonen seemed to have found a balance between his songwriting ambitions and the need to provide springboards for the group's boogie-all-night improvisations. Here, "Sunrise Dance with the Devil" and "Bar Room Crystal Ball" feature good lyrics and excellent hooks, yet still fit into Hot Tuna's heavy approach.

Hot Foot Powder is Peter Green's second album made up entirely of covers of the music by the legendary Delta bluesman Robert Johnson. In fact, with this album and its predecessor, The Robert Johnson Songbook, Green has recorded every song that Robert Johnson is known to have composed and recorded. Where Johnson often played and sang like a man whose life depended on it, Green plays and sings like a man whose next beer depends on it, surprisingly with very nice results. His performance on the title track is marvelously lazy and laid-back throughout this bluesy album, which also features Green's band, the Splinter Group, including Nigel Watson. Dr. John, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Hubert Sumlin, and Joe Louis Walker all make guest appearances on the album, along with Honey Boy Edwards, who knew and performed with Robert Johnson. The only slight drawback to this album are the few vocal performances of Nigel Watson, who is, perhaps, technically a better vocalist than Peter Green; however, his voice lacks Green's soulful weariness. Hot Foot Powder's packaging, designed by 9th Planet, is both a creative and fun complement to the music within.

Peter Green – guitar/slide guitar/ harmonica/vocals
Nigel Watson – guitar/slide guitar/vocals
Roger Cotton – guitar/piano
Pete Stroud – upright bass
Larry Tolfree – drums
Brian Bull – guitar (on 2 & 5)

Special guests:

Dr. John – piano (2 & 5)
Buddy Guy – guitar (12)
Otis Rush – guitar (1 & 4)
Hubert Sumlin – guitar (3)
Honey Boy Edwards – guitar (8)
Joe Luis Walker – guitar (8)

Bachman Turner Overdrive - Trial By Fire

Bachman-Turner Overdrive
Trial by Fire: Greatest & Latest

Recorded in PUK Recording studios a/s,Denmark, February/March 1996
eac.wavpack.covers

Before writing anything further, it is important to note that this is NOT a 'Greatest Hits' compilation, nor is it really meant to be. This is often considered to be the group's 10th studio albums, originally recorded by the label CMC as Trial By Fire: Greatest & Latest in 1996. This reissue, released by Disky, drops Trial By Fire from the title, which apparently leads people to believe that this is a compilation. If you are looking to purchase a compilation of BTO's 1970s hits, then this is not the CD for you, as the 1970s titled included here are remakes (which the original record label apparently insisted on recording).

The ten remakes are actually quite good in my opinion, although most are not quite as good as the originals. Blue Collar, Hold Back The Water, and Gimme Your Money Please are particularly good, although many BTO fans have complained about the last of those three. RODTH, FWD, and TILAM do not seem to have the same driving force of the originals but are still good (FWD also includes part of Free Wheelin', which I liked). Not Fragile is even heavier than the original, if that is possible. The two tracks on the album that were originally sung by Randy Bachman (Hey You and YASNY) are a little difficult to get used to for some - I really liked the new version of Hey You but wasn't struck on the YASNY remake. The vocalist (Randy Murray, the newest member of the band) is very good though, and I would have liked to have heard him try some more songs.

The five new songs are the best points of this album, especially the two that were written by the group members. All five are sung by C.F. Turner. Trial By Fire and Nothin' Comes Easy are now two of my favorite BTO songs of all time (Nothin' Comes Easy is my second favorite of them all) - both sound very modern and energetic (much more so than anything on their last four albums, although I liked those too). House of the Rising Sun (a cover of the Animals' hit) was released as a single in Europe I believe, and is the best version of the song I have ever heard - it sounds just as good in concert too. Testify and A Sense of Danger are not quite as good as the other three - Testify is more lightweight pop and has unusual lyrics for a BTO song, and A Sense of Danger is more retro boogie (reminds me of Texas Cannonball by Union for some reason). Both are still pretty good though.

Anyway, if you're looking for a collection of BTO's classic hits, this is not the CD to buy. But if you're looking to expand your BTO collection with something new and have enjoyed some of their earlier work, you just may enjoy this album for what it is.Amazon

They do 5 new songs, including their version of "House of the Rising Sun", and 10 of their oldies. BTO hasn't done much recording in recent years, so this collection from 1996 should be of interest to fans of the group. Most are faithful to the original versions, but it's nice to hear a few variations. "Hold Back the Water" is done acoustically on this CD, and "Blue Collar" has an extended solo by Randy Murray (you gotta see him do this one live - he has that guitar smokin'!). All of the new songs stay within the well defined BTO sound - best of the bunch IMHO are "Trial by Fire" and "Sense of Danger", spotlighting the great, gruff vocals of bassman C. F. Turner.
